Not entirely sure what you are doing but keep in mind that a 5AR4 will require 5 volts as opposed to the 6X4 (6 volt) which you are currently using. If the 6X4 is working, I assume that you don't need massive amounts of current to power your circuit. This opens up several options for rectifier tubes. If you haven't already, download TDSL, and you will have a huge choice of rectifiers to choose from. A few of my favorite 6 volt rectifiers are the 6CA4/EZ81, the 6x5g (octal base), and the 6v4.
