I tend to agree, bigger isn't better. Also toroids like more step down a 117+117 to 117+117 used as phase splitter was very bad.However 117+117 to 18+18 worked well and using one primary as a secondary for a 1:1. One of the secondaries would have to be used to cancel dc current.
A huge advantage to the toroids is that folks can wind their own secondaries for a Z of thier choice. Go to www.toroid.com at the "kit" page for a good idea of the turns per volts for typical sizes. Often only 50-100 turns are needed on the secondary for custom audio output sizes. This info can be loosly applid to surplus models from other manufacturers for a starter then a few turns one way or another to get it right.
One more thing to look out for with toroids is if the primaries are wound bifiller as in the Hammonds. For 1:1 this is an advantage but for some aplications it can be a dissadvantage.
