Hi Gary. Thanks goodness. Finally someone came out from the other side of the fence speaking CALMY with some sense. I must have trespassed upon some private property without the signage of "beware of dogs". Furious dogs dashed out behind the fence, barking off their heads!!!!!!
First off, thanks for your info re TV danmper tubes. I wonder if you
could furnish me with the circuit diagrams also. If there any cheaper
equals to do the job?It is a matter of personal taste in design & music listening as Lynn already said. I already stated I never ever dispute on personal preferences.
Likewise for inter-transformers, when you say they sound more "transparent" than caps, apparently the distortions generated
through the transformers fall in line with the masking effect of our
ear/brain sonic perception. In other words, they 'cheat' our ears.In the real world, are all transformers behave the same ideal way as per the circuit designers' specs? Nope. One important issue is all iron goods get their own distinct sonic signatures more pronounced than any other coupling components, e.g. caps, due to the iron core hysteresis, copper wire insulation varish & winding geometry, etc. That's why Sakuma-san always specifies only one make of iron goods: Tamura, made in Japan & only certain model nos, so that the sonic signatures of the amps he builds can be reasonably maintained.
Here comes another woe: high cost of quality iron goods. While some privileged can afford this very costly alternative, many less privileged may not want to spend up to 80% of the DIY project budget for transformers alone. I can but I don't want to unless it is proven absolutely a must, e.g. power transformers.
That's why my new project now underway is OTL-OCL monoblock power amp using the famous Russian airfighter twin-triode output tubes: 6C33B-C.
I am planning to go even without power tranformers. It will probably be the world's first 'no-iron' all-triode amp!!! It goes in line with my design philosophy - straight line concept. We are in the new millennium. Buddy. Why still linqering in the 'good old' days of 1930s?
Caps, like any iron goods, get their own distortion & coloration.
Like it or not, caps are indispensable in the audio signal chain,
e.g. caps used in X-over networks in speaker systems. I always
use quality polypropylene film caps for my amps coupling & my speaker X-overs.I never want to step on whoever's toes. When I read Lynn's pretty polite way of responding UL's 'pen-insults', quite contrary to those harsh fire-backs to UL by Lynn's 'hostile' fans, I think I should say something for UL. In fact, I never knew UL before. Surely, I am not he, either. The moderators here can certify this fact.
I never ever said in my post Lynn selling amps, "as a manufacturer", or not, in AA. Please show me where in the post I did. Instead, I said he is "equipment vendor", that you have admitted. He is always selling his splendid idea of all-transfomer-coupling in amp design, which is used in Amity & Aurora amps SOON available for sale in Nutshell Hi-Fi website. I got no problem with that. That is his own business. Buddy, please don't put your words in my mouth!
With UL's 'accusation' against Lynn on "aiming at credit or commercial something", I said "whether you (Lynn) have used AA as your products marketplace is for the moderators to find out." Isn't it an impartial statement for both Lynn & UL? If not, would Lynn' fans please act in a civilized maner to voice their support for their 'idol'? This forum is NOT a dumpyard where one can litter as one wants. Please act maturely like an adult. I could use foul langugage, too, like someone just did to me, but I won't as I respect AA, its moderators & readers.
(Disclaimer: dear moderators, I am not here selling any commercial products for whoever.)
Let's take a look at Nutshell Hi-fi website. It reads in the first paragraph: "...In the near future, we plan to offer Gary Dahl's elegant headphone amp, along with Amity & Aurora all-transformer-coupled all-triode amps." Lynn's name was mentioned all over the site, including his e-mail address.
You said "Lynn has never offered a single tube component for sale to anyone in his whole life. None are for sale in the Nutshell site..."
You are correct in this statement just for now, but will be wrong "in the near future" as stated in the site. You may argue Lynn will not be involved in actually selling the amps employing the circuits he designed, in Nutshell site. But with his name mentioned all over the site, does it imply to the potential customers that he is behind the scene or at least, he endorses what is going on in the marketing of the amps which he claims he designed?
So, UL's "accusation" against Lynn is not unfounded!
Fair is fair. Right?Good listening
