R input filters

Zobsky,

The Triad C-40X, we determined some time ago, is unacceptable under the large current draw of a P-P 2A3 amp, with TWO final tubes, despite its 600 mA. rating and my earliest postings suggesting it was "universal and cheap". It is cheap, but not universal. I have covered this a few times before.

The Triad C-40X would be OK for L1 position in a SE Type 45 amp, or perhaps in a 2A3, ONE SE channel. That way, with the reduced current draw, it will have the magnetic overhead we like to see.

The unavailable Thailand-made Stancor C-2708s would be a step in the right direction, as they usually measure about 500 mHY versus a C-40X's 335 mHY measurement, and it is easier on the rectifier and the choke.

A "R" input filter is certainly not ideal, (unless it has some minor inductance, which helps). Your "R" filter is better than any mis-applied L input filter. But a properly designed LSES choke for the P-P load would be the best approach for a highest quality input filter I could imagine. I am working on that one need now !!
