Douglas, I had trouble understanding this question. Are you asking why the presence of IMD is a bad thing, or why IMD is so bad in pentodes? LOL, given some of our past discussions, you're probably asking something at a much deeper level than I realize.

NFB reduces distortion by the same amount in which it is applied. IOW, if the designer applies 6 dB of NFB, distortion will be reduced inside the loop by half. I think you already know this, so maybe I got this question wrong, too.
