I have never had a problem with the star attached to the chassis. The trick is not to allow small signal grounds to use the same path back to the star as high level grounds. Also, only the star and the third wire of the line cord should be attached to the chassis (they don't need to be in the same physical location). I used this methodology in the high-gain guitar amplifier I built recently, which has much more gain than even a phono preamp. It was hum-free without further changes.
