Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

RE: According to Dennis.... extreme solution

Whenever we get an amp in here for
a go-over, the amp is first listened to
with tubes we know sound excellent.

The amp usually sounds pretty good with
zero problems.

Just for kicks we run a few O'scope pictures
running my fave-- an old W.E. Signal gen.
Why this thing? One day I took it apart and
sort of "idealized" it-- I have loved it ever since.

Then, We cosmetically clean up the amp, if it's really old,
do some transformer end-bell powder-coating. It has
to be pristine when the guy gets it back.

Under chassis gets a thorough cleaning-- some have
had spider nests, etc.! Then, a listen again, and
O'scope pictures again.

Then ALL NEW TUBE SOCKETS, and a new INPUT RCA jack.
Do these new parts need break-in? Yes, they do! Also,
the new solder joints require break-in.

Then, relisten and re-test. The new sockets & jacks
bring it up to what it's supposed to do-- a large
improvement! An instruction sheet goes with it--
explaining how to use 4 fingers (both hands) on the
base of an octal tube to remove it vertically, and
save your tube sockets from ruin---- HAH! Just put the
new ones in vertically (no tilting, please!), and you're
home free.

Just to make sure, the guy gets all new tubes, and
his old ones back also. If an amp is shipped to us, we
request the amp only-- keep your tubes at home, you'll
be receiving a new set as well.
