I spend a lot of time with SMT devices at work, frequently as small as 0603. The problem with all SMT, regardless of size, is that removal of even the common parts requires two irons. Also, I do all work under a magnifying lamp, and final inspection is performed under a microscope. Not sure I would want to do any of this at home. About the ICs, almost any pitch can be soldered if the excess is wicked off afterward. :)
