If you run AC current through the chassis, there will be voltage drop - may be only millivolts, but those millivolts can get amplified as hum... the fix is to make sure no high current loops include the chassis. Every high current loop should be grounded at one point only! If you do that, all will be well, with star grounding or random grounding. Bus grounding can work if you connect the grounds in the correct order; it can make things worse if not. Some commercial designs appear to break this rule, but work well due to layout (AC current loops exist in chassis but don't cross high gain areas). Two of the highest current loops are AC heaters and power supply ripple current. Get one of these wrong and you'll have hum that seems impossible to fix - ground them properly and they won't induce hum.
