Doubler will lose two diode drops (about a volt) from 12.6V or about 8%. A full-wave bridge will lose two diode drops (slightly more due to higher current) from 6.3V or about 18%. So the doubler makes better use of that 6.3V winding - proportionally more voltage, less heat.
