The way I see it, there are three grounds that we would like to keep separate - or at least control where they are connected:1. earth ground
2. power supply ground
3. signal groundUnfortunately, it's hard to keep ps ground and signal ground separated without going fully balanced differential front to back. Maybe it would be possible with a separate ps for each stage; I haven't thought it all the way through. So the problem comes down to controlling how and where ps/signal ground is connected to earth ground.
We want all of our metal chassis connected to earth ground for safety. We also want all of our metal chassis connected to signal ground for shielding purposes. There's no conflict if we have only one chassis, but if there are more than one then we end up having all of them connected together through both the earth connection (at the wall outlet, maybe farther, potentially running all the way to the breaker box and back) and also through signal ground by any interconnects.
As far as I know, the only full solution is to get rid of the question by getting rid of the metal chassis. :-)
