Re: Substitute for 1/2 a 12AX7?

Hi David,
I actually recommend that you stick to the circuit as I designed it and not substitute another type for the 12AX7 called for in the original design. (In some instances you could encounter stability issues and if the dc conditions are not similar the performance of the driver stage will be compromised.) If you are concerned about maximizing tube life I would wire the amplifier circuits such that opposite triodes are used in each amplifier's front end and then swap them periodically. Note that there is an excellent range of choices in current production, NOS, and used 12AX7 stocks at reasonable prices, whereas EF86 current production aren't very good sounding, and NOS are quite expensive. Note that you can safely use the high mu triode section of the 6AV6 or 12AV6 triode/duodiode (7 pins) as it is quite close to the 12AX7 in electrical characteristics, however I cannot vouch for the sonic merit of this tube.
