I had a few EL84 amps (VTL Tiny Triodes, Leak Stereo 20, and a pair of obscure 1950's vintage UK monos Made by a company called Astronic). All were very good. My favorote were actually the Astonics which I modified slightly to Class A biased, triode connected output tubes and bypassed the EF86 input stage as it had way too much gain for my application.
Since the Leak was given to me free (and are relatively common)and some friends and I were playing around with 6C45P tubes in Spud amps, I decided to build a single stage transformer input PP amp on the Leak chassis. It is pretty good, I think. If you have a chssis from a EL84 PP amp floating around that you don't mind "sacrificing", you may find this a very satidfying excercise. Output is somewhere between 3 and 4 watts.
