What is the best sounding EL84 based PP amp you have owned? I tried a few different models hoping for an upgrade from the Grommes 24PG (my first EL84 amp). Everyone would like an exciting performance upgrade, right? I have tried the following:The Dynaco Stereo 35 (passive preamp) stock and upgraded.
Scott 222B (8-5-1) stock & upgraded.
Fisher X101 stock & upgraded.Stock & upgraded for the most part is rolling tubes & coupling caps. I have tried quality Mullard and other manufacture tubes in all the amps, thus perhaps close to 'level playing field' tube wise.
Although all the amps above sound simular, all have some smearing in the frequency range unlike the Grommes 24PG. Thus, hoping to find that special amp without going thru say ten EL84 PP amplifiers or is it simply a 'crap shoot' due to system synergy, room effects, etc.
BTW- Speakers are tube friendly ProAc 2.5 Response.
