I needed a garage amp too and built an EL-84PP similar to the Eico HF-86 (search for Eico HF-86 schematic in google). I'm very fond of it, despite my other amps being 2A3-SE's. Has definitely some toe-tapping factor in it.

Definitely worth a try if your console iron is PP too.

Before ending up with the HF-86 topology, i tweaked around a Leak
TL/12 schematic (with a Schmit phase splitter) and didn't like the sound at all.

PS: The 7247 used in the front-end is one half a 12AX7, the other half
corresponding to a 12AU7. The 12AX7 is DC-coupled to the 12AU7,
perhaps this gives the kick to the amp. I hooked mine up in UL-mode with separate cathode bias resistors.
