I know that the power transformer of my EICO HF-52 was too hot to keep my hand on, but it ran flawlessly for many, many years (wish I still had it).
I also know that my current EICO HF-81 transformer runs very hot... but it's entirely possible that it really needs new PS caps.
Finally, I also (unfortunately) know that one of my father's EICO HF12's had a power transformer burn up (what a smell) in my young days.
so...
It's entirely possible that EICO was a little unconservative in their PS transformer specs... but, your hot transformer may not be TOO hot.
Not to discount any of the advice given by others here but I thought it was worth mentioning.
