Hi Mike,
Believe it or not, I try not to be dogmatic in my fight against Jeff's dogma. :-)
To get 50ma. of plate current at 300 volts across a 2a3, the grid will need to be at about -59 volts.
To get the most Class A and have the least distortion (at all power levels), the plate load should be about 4K.
There is no problem with that operating point.
What Jeff was suggesting is, 250 volts across the tube at 45ma. with a 2500 ohms plate load.
I never said that operating point won't work. It will, but it only gives 2.4 watts Class A and the distortion is higher at all power levels.
The same 45ma. of current at 250 volts, with a higher plate load of 3500 ohms and you get 3.35 watts and the distortion is lower at all power levels.
Back to the 250, 60 at 2500 ohms (really 2400 ohms is better) and you get 4.2 watts Class A and the distortion is lower still at all power levels.
Now, increase the plate load for any of these operating points and the total power goes down but it's all Class A and the distortion also goes down at all power levels.
I really don't want to argue with Jeff. There's not much point. He won't listen. I just don't want other people, who might not know better, to get sucked into what I call "bad info" that Jeff can't seem to help but spew.
I'm sorry if that sounds harsh.
Sincerely, Tre'
