Hi 7N7I should have pointed out that I dropped the B+ when I inserted the plate choke so that it used the same operating point as the resistors. I used a B+ of approx 350V for the resistor, so it was operating in a fairly linear part of the curves. I also tried higher load resistors, but they all had the same "sound".
I intend trying other drivers in place of the 6V6. Thanks for your reply.Doug
