Well I don't have the answer, that is choke vs. CCS comparison.
But I tried, last night, the CCS(simple C4S?) to my line stage and I liked it. Yes as you said for budget solution they are more than great. It is cheap to try. Only two TRs one zener/LED/and some R and C.
Why don't you try it first? Rather than relying on other's comments. I mean they are cheap to do and worth the small time.Maybe I should make similar question to yours- CCS vs. plate choke
