1626 versus 45

Has anyone had experience comparing 1626 based amps to the 45? At present I listen to a 1626 run at 35 mA idle, well above specs but without apparent ill effects. The driver tube is a 12sn7gt at 4 mA, rc coupled. Both tubes are grid battery biased. Sounds wonderful driving Bose 601, Series III (Yeh, I know. I was going to Ebay them for a buddy but was shocked at how muscial and open they sounded. Nice speaker). However, the solder bug has bitten again, so I am looking for a new project.

I have never built a DHT, and 45 seems to be the favorite de jour. However, they are quite expensive. Are we talking a night and day difference or something subtle? If I took the step, I would go all out, with choke loading and current regulation on the filaments.

Thanks in advance.
