What type of speakers are you using?

This is a loaded troll(ish) type question at best. The tubes have nothing in common. There are good EL34 amps and bad ones. Same for 45 amps. Before anyone bites on your question too hard perhaps you could tell us how efficient your speakers are? The best place to audition these tube amplifiers is at a higher end audio dealer. One that has perhaps some Conrad Johnson EL34 amps and perhaps a 45 amp on display. I own 45, el34, 300b, KT-88, and 6550 tube amps. My 35 wpc Klimo el34 push pull amps are very nice sounding as are my 1.8 wpc 45 mono blocks. There is no way to directly compare the two types of tubes. All audio is very subjective, none more so than tube audio and horn speakers. Just for example I like the sound of Mullard EL34 tubes, the real ones and not the new production to be sure. As for 45 tubes they are all very good sounding to my ears. I only own three differnt types of 45 output tubes and I like them all. You have to go out and audition some tube amps at your leisure and do some homework by reading for too many hours on the merits of each tube separately. I could confuse you further by mentioning that I use 45 mono blocks for my high frequency horns, and the Klimo EL34 and 300b mono amps for my bass bins. I am still not sure which I like better driving my bass bins. This magic is done with the use of a marchand tube crossover to biamplify my speakers. Good luck! John C.
