Bugle 45 - Preamp required?

Hello there,
I am considering building my first SET, a Bugle 45. Is a preamp needed or can I run a CD source direct through an Alps pot?
Are there any other similar designs out there that work well without a preamp?
Also, any opinions on running this amp with 95-96db/watt speakers (Adrire HE10s) to normal listening levels? I am running a powered sub also, FWIW.
