There are no untouchable circuits, including mine. I think *you* need to gain some perspective in what the point of participating in this forum is if not to improve on existing designs and hash out new ones. If the point of audioasylum is simply to handhold a bunch of newcomers through their first audio projects, then count me out.
I apologize if people thought my point was to make Eric Barbour look like a hack - it was not. I don't know the man. My point was simply that if you're going to go throught the trouble and expense of building an amp, especially one using a great tube like a 45 (that can be pricey), then you should do it right and design a suitable driver stage for it. If an RC coupled single gain stage in front of *any* power tube is all it takes to make a "classic" then, hell, I should get designer of the year awards for 1998, 1999, and 2000 - retroactively.Joel
