Your explaination is comprehensive. Including various type of driving tube in the design scope make thing more flexible. I agree.
I should have said that having a non-triode tube in SET amp design may somehow detach the meaning.As I said it could be just my or a group of people's preception. The similar example for design contradiction would be having a differential stage driver (with split phase mechanisim) to drive a SE output. It losses the point of having SE power output stage.
I do beilive having full stage triode to produce good sound is possible. It should not be just some kind of inborn nature of specific type of tube like triode or pentode. To explore the direction of making a good driving circuit should rely on scientific figures or approaches.
After all I do agree your recommendation of utilizing EL34 or some other pentode. So far I have seen many design using it. That means this kind of design is commonly accepted by people. Likewise triode having the similar charateristic may also do the job. The chanllenge is to find out which one and how ??
Not many power triode driver can be used as flexible as EL34 or 6L6 etc. DHT like 2A3 or 6B4G having cause considerably higher hum level feed into the 300B. A 60mV HT hum level on 2A3 will be amplified to 180mV via 300B. After the step down of OPT it still cause nearly 10mV noise level. I would think to have IDHT to act as driver then.
