RE: 7025 DC 2A3...

All valid points, Stephen.

One could just stack-up 6SN7's, pile-on 300B's, or go to triode-connected KT88. Then, he'd have what can be had commercially for peanuts, compared with the cost of DIY'ing it.

I think what the guys who are playing with 2A3's and 12AX7's are after is a relatively inexpensive way of getting some speed, and a sense of presence and reality back into played-back music without having to invent the Rocket Ship to Pluto.

That's their way of approaching it. What I have done is point out that this approach requires super-accurate, very efficient speakers-- admittedly not for every home, but VERY necessary if one is to play back music realistically..

If someone DOES go after these kinds of speakers, then he can build amplifiers that greatly outperform-- musically-- everything else.

Since we all are limited by source components and studio music-feeds, the one place left where one can make a whopping difference is in the amplifier, something that was once considered a benign "scientifically correct" item-- nothing to be concerned about as long as it had the requisite POWER and Bandwidth.

Well, we know better now. Most amps, regardless of price or performance specs, simply shred, delay, and destroy music-- that is, the parts of it that make sound systems sound real, lifelike, present, and nearly as potent as the performers. The measured specs are there-- the music IS NOT. Whether it's DIY or commercial has had no bearing on this problem, whatsoever.

Enter, at this point, the simplest amp that one can configure, and the measurements look worse, but the musical performance drastically improves.

That point is no longer debatable-- it is demonstrated fact.

The best amplifier in the world is ONE tube or ONE transistor.

Any of the other parts you can get rid of is going to greatly benefit musical reproduction.

The guy with 12AX7 in hand is trying to get rid of the extra parts in the amp for good reasons.
