I'm not particularly anything about a particular device. You could sub 12AX7 with 7B4 or 6SL7 or any other high rp, high mu, low current device. They all have a particular characteristic as a driver and as fist gain stage in a phono.
I've made loads of stuff with these things in them. Cut my teeth on that sort of stuff. They're easy to use. Great starting points and some good sounding stuff can be made.
The lower rp, high mu and therefore high gm alternatives can be hot to handle, hard to build with and so may not be suitable for beginners to use.
Sure build topology and parts make a difference but they're only the final 10% to 20% of the deal IMHO and then only for that person in their system and so on. Once parts are of decent enough quality, the remainder is only fluff compared to circuit topology and layout. Sure you can polish a turd but it's still a turd. And there's a lot of that going on especially in the commercial world. But hey, if that's yer thing, that's fine. There's a lot of enjoyment to be had doing that.
I'm only saying, it can be a waste of money when better topologies can be explored. There is no one definitive answer to a 2 stage amp which is what we are hearing around these parts:- high mu low current driver, some 2A3 final, high eff speak. There are other ways thank goodness.
And when I say designers are hamstrung by the bean counters, I do mean virtually all; 99.9% are. Even Ferrari engineers are. About the only car I can think of that hasn't been was the Maclaren F1 road car. The equivalent to them are probably Silbertone. Everyone else is, whether they like to admit it or not is another thing. And as taste has much to do with this as well as elitism, then it's all arbitrary anyway. As a DIYer, I couldn't care less. Nice to look, nice to dream, don't really need it in my life.
We all have our own definition of our best no compromise effort and we really don't need anyone else telling us that our effort doesn't cut it. I say let people aspire to doing better. They will recognise it at the right time. That's how evolution works ;)
cheers,
Stephen
