I have breadboarded over 30 different amps and built 5 more in the last 10 years and there is no way I will believe that output tubes don't have a chacteristic sound. You can make each one work at it's best, sure, but you are not going to get a 2A3 to sound like a 45 when both are at their best. They each have strengths and weaknesses and that is where you hear the difference.
