I maybe can help here-- there is no such thing as a "tube sound" with a single-plate 2A3 VS a 45. All you heard was what a certain tube did in a certain circuit.

What I mean is that an IDEAL circuit for either tube will SOUND EXACTLY ALIKE-- a really good amp will mimic the recorded source-- and will not sound like a certain tube.

It is up to you to decide on what musical qualities you want in an amplifier amd then build that. You select the output tube to match what you can get in a really good output transformer.... NOT by deciding that one tube type sounds different than another.... factors that you don't know...... and that, in any case are really simple to "voice" once the amp is built. In my own case, I never have to "voice" an amplifier. It is just built to ideal operating points and built with the best parts, and it ends up doing what it is supposed to do.

I DO NOT CARE what the output tube is-- I will get the recording reproduced exactly as it is with any good output tube.

The output tube, then, is chosen according to OUTPUT TRANSFORMER NEED-- what is the BEST output tranny-- regardless of power level considerations-- only what is the best overall transformer size.. Remember-- this is Single-Ended, and you have a very narrow window in order to find a really great output tranny.

THEN, you get the output tube to match the output transformer chosen.

NEXT, AFTER THIS IS DONE, and NOT UNTIL IT IS-- you finally choose your speaker. The speaker will be chosen to be ideal for the amplifier that resulted from your approach.

In actual practice, I have gotten the most powerful dynamics, the best bottom end, the best midranges and highs-- from about 1/2 watt MAXIMUM.
