Hello Vinny,Well, seems like your only experience in Type 45s is a Bugle, so you have never done what I am suggesting!! Thats why I did the post, because I sensed you were unaware of the consequences - and I am attempting to help you.
But I do KNOW from direct experience, DHT finals sound better to me when operated conservatively. I suggest you have never heard a Type 45 or a 2A3 at its best, until you hear either tube type optimized for conservative dissipation.
Furthermore, I am not alone in this conclusion, three of the best known triode amp builders I personally know, (names people respect) - the TRUE audio ARTISTS, operate their DHTs at conservative op points, because it sounds better that way in their amps.
Gordon ran 35 mills and about 275 VDC plate to cathode, that is about 9.625 watts dissipation on a 10 watt rated tube. (The car is doing 96 MPH, very close to its 100 MPH redline!)
The best op point I am aware of for a Type 45 is 245 VDC P-K and .028 mA. in a well designed (good power supply) amp. That is 6.86 watts plate dissipation.(68 MPH, cruise all day long - a breeze - versus the 100 MPH redline.)
The perceived loudness difference between a "2 watt" Type 45 amp and a "3/4 to 1 watt" Type 45 amp, is negligible in loudness from your speakers, dB wise. The QUALITY difference between the two operating points is not negligible, its less "stressed sounding" at lower dissipations, and it warrants the use of the conservative point from what I always hear. So, I just wanted you to be aware of this aspect of DHT design, be informed.
The informed choice between "quality and quantity" is totally yours. As I've posted earlier, there is no free lunch. You are the one who will spend the money and live with the result.
