Hi Jeff:
I doubt if he was running the tubes hot enough to melt the solder in the pins. That would have to be awfully hot! That much heat would have damaged other components in the amp as well.
Most likely it was a bad solder joint on the pin to begin with. I have repaired brand new tubes with badly soldered pins.
