Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

No free lunch !!!

Hi,

A question for you:

If the circuit is running the tubes so hard as to melt solder out of the pins, than is that a problem of the tube, or of very POOR audio design?

I had a friend in Oakland tell me his SE 45 DRD circuit, had 525 VDC at the plate of the Type 45 in a direct couple. The 45 tube is biased for 50 mills !!! Does the designer ever sell on specs, by getting a lot of power output from an amp? Who pays the price??

Its NOT the tubes that are junk when solder melts out of the pins, its the audio designer taking GROSS liberties, with the end-user, paying the price.

If you were simply unaware (up till now) of these consequences of non-conservative operating points, well - now the onus falls upon you alone, because now - you know!

Yes...... "no free lunch". To fix a circuit that melts solder out of tube pins, one must simply reduce the B+ voltage, or the current, or both - to conservative levels.
