The JE Labs Simple 45 amp is a really good 1st scratch built project. Simple circuit, low parts count.Gordon Rankin's Bugle 45, orig. published in Sound Practices, is much better, tho a bit harder build. Should be able to find a link to a schemo around the asylum archives.
I built the Simple 45 using "donor" iron out of an old SE EL84 console (added 2.5V filament trans), sounded pretty good for a $100 amp. I converted to a 6SL7 SRPP front end, and it's good enough to hold its own against some of the entry-level SE 45's offered commercially. Bugle is still better, tho.
