I'll say it again 52db is a 500:1 voltage ratio!your 77dB is a 7500:1 voltage ratio. you have way to much gain and adding more is just shooting yourself in the foot. IF you use a 100K pot this means your series element is essentially 100K and your shunt element is 13 ohms. This is crazy!
anybody routinely using more than say 40dB of attenuation needs to rework their gain structure PERIOD! Even 40dB is a 100:1 ratio to get that kind of gain with dht's takes 3+ stages only to throw it away in a resistor.... just plain crazy!
IMO you need to forget about the linestage, and get a few other stages out of the way and then start thinking about attenuation. When you get to the point where you cannot turn it up enough then you should consider a linestage.
