I get your general drift. There certainly are a lot of sources available today, and since R2R is definitely not portable, why do we do it? I’m new to R2R so I guess I play with it because it’s fun. Back in R2R’s heyday, I couldn’t afford it. Now I have two decks, acquired in the last 6 months. (Akai GX-630DB and Teac A-3300SX)I do listen to CD’s, but not near as much as I used to. Back in the pre-CD era, I used to tape a lot of LP’s to cassette for enjoyment in the car. Now I don’t even own a decent cassette deck (yet). I am definitely an analog guy and I think LP’s or good R2R recordings beat the hell out of any digital source available. Analog just sounds more like music to me. That said, I will openly admit to having no exposure to Sirius or any of the hi-rez digital formats so maybe my devotion to analog is a bit biased and closed minded.
So, for home enjoyment, I’ll be using my R2R decks for recording compilations from my LP’s and listening to prerecorded 4-Track tapes which are readily available at decent prices on Ebay. Even at 3.75 IPS, I think the prerecorded tapes sound better than CD’s in my system.
CD’s are good enough for the car. But then again, my car does have a cassette player in addition to the CD….Hmmmm.
