Last night I tried an experiment comparing vinyl records with recordings made from the vinyl records, just for the fun of it. The records used were the new Simply Vinyl reissue of Bach/Starker Cello Suites and the new Green Room Productions Schumann/John Lill Piano works. Both of these records sound fantastic on my system. The records were played on my MMF-7 with Shure V15VxMR cartridge. The tape recordings were done on my Akai GX-630DB using new Quantegy 456 tape at 7.5 IPS with Dolby. After making the recordings, I queued up both sources so playback was approximately synchronized. I then listened while switching back and forth between the tape and records with the volume matched as well as possible by ear.
After listening, I concluded that the vinyl records still had a slight edge over the tape recordings. The tape sounded a bit “closed in†or “dull†compared to the records. Maybe the Dolby has something to do with that. Perhaps I should try it again without the Dolby engaged.
What was the point of this highly unscientific and subjective experiment? I don’t know. I guess I was bored and just wanted to play with the tape deck. Has anyone else ever tried this?
