There are several mission-critical ;) plastic parts that have become brittle and are, at the least, compromised.I "had" one in working condition. It was not actually mine, as it happens (but that's not really a critical piece of the tale). With its actual owner's permission, I passed the deck on to a mutual friend of ours who was looking for a decent quality cassette deck to restore and (electrically) tweak as a COVID-era mental health project. That he did, but it was a long, tedious, and not particularly inexpensive process.
He moved on to much more modern (and not at all inexpensive ) Sony three-head decks (1990s vintage) that, likewise, were labors of love to rehab, but were (per my colleague's testimony) better designed, better built, and sounded better when all was said and done.
I think I still have one, actually, but it's in no better shape than the one above at this late date. :-/
all the best,
mrh
