Close-miked multiple mono. Musicians in little booths to isolate them, and their sound, from each other.
Then some third party ;) sits at a console and makes a stereo "image" with the pieces.
... and the audiophiles all get excited about the soundstaging .
Now, look what you've done! You've got me going!
Gonna have to go out now and find some kids out in the yard for me to shake my cane and yell at!
