Yes, it was built for similar application - recording on location, and apparently far more popular in Japan than here. That one is the Japanese model as well.

I am familiar with the 777 model, Sony made several good ones at that time. There was also the 770, a portable pro model, also with batteries, and even with 15ips speed.
