Unfortunately, and quite universally, the sound circuits in those pro decks is not designed to the current high end audio standards. They mostly come from the era when the designers had just discovered opAmps, and they stuck them everywhere. Otari is not an exception, and you can see that even in the top models from Studer or Revox.
So anyone interested in better sound should consider an outboard head preamp - and hopefully a tube model. :)
It is not hard to modify the Otari headblock to have the external connection. Ideally you would also have the second block for "normal" use - they are not that hard to find. I recently bought one in good condition for just $100, and it was the "reverse" one, with 4-track recording, which worked just fine in my case because my other decks are 2-track.
