The M was always a "step up" from the P, in that it uses the wide gap heads (butterfly on the later models)and a higher bias frequency (double the P).
I now have to temper my enthusiasm for certain "P's" from a recording perspective. Last Friday night, I did a recording using a P8 sent in for repair - turned out that I had lent out my own "customized" P7, and had forgotten that fact. Anyway; I was not blown away by the results. One reason may be that this machine is like a few other "8's" that I have worked on, whereby after changing playback/record head brands from Bogen to Nortronics in the late 70's, Stellavox used consumer grade heads (2000) series on some machines instead of the Professional (8000) series used on others. Why this was done I have no clue. I hope to repeat the "experiment" soon with my own machine (with pro wide gap heads) and hopefully the same musicians.
