ROT: maybe.... some might call it a "search for perfection". Hey, let's try to keep things in perspective. As I heard Dick Sequerra say - your HiFi is a "PLEASURE MACHINE". Whether or not it is a hobby, I opine that ones search for "pleasure" entails experiencing, learning, and (unfortunately) spending money.

Please start by thinking about the analogy between tape and phono: transport = turntable/tonearm; tape head = cartridge; preamp = preamp (but with different equalization). Regarding preamps; unfortunately there are VERY few out there that have tape EQ. The ones that do are "expensive" because they are of very good QUALITY, and probably most important (from the manufacturer's perspective) are made in very limited QUANTITY.

Now, why might someone want to "UPGRADE"??
The way I see this game being played is:
1. You have a system of high enough "accuracy" to reproduce differences between equipment(s);
2. You can hear (detect) these differences
3. You like (versus dislike) the differences enough to want to change ("UPGRADE"),
3. AND you have the money to do so..

I have taken the time (and had the ability, mostly via borrowing) to listen to various tape preamps. I have found that they do sound different. Ready for this - I've also taken the time (and had the ability) to listen to various tape heads. They also sound different.

Religion? God I hope not. With me it's more of an addiction - dare I say love? Unfortunately, The distinction gets blurred when I enjoy the music with the afternoon cocktail.
