Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

Face it, kids. Cassettes are a convenience format. They're not high-fidelity. So it's not surprising that newer, more convenient, formats have taken over.

Maybe if the cassette manufacturers would have developed high-speed winding, along with some type of time-code markers, things would be different. ("Go to track 5, point 1:24".) But who in this day would be a buyer? Not enough.

On the other hand, if I could sell even a half-million of something, I'd be a rich guy. But the big companies that most people buy from (because it's the cheapist) don't care about the niche markets, because their customers don't care. Don't blame it on the manufacturers or the retailers. The buyer decides what to buy, and the suppliers supply it.

As a result, this is where our society is.

Who doesn't get that?
