RE: Nakamichi Reference Recording Series Pre-Recorded Cassettes

Hi, vinyl survivor:

You should replace the bad tube and DO NOT JUST PLUG IN YOUR MX-10 to see if it works, without first bringing it up SLOWLY using a Variac!

When I got my unit in a flea market about twenty-five years ago, I had previously owned two of these. I never used those other units, but sold them to a recording studio down in Los Angeles at that time.

The unit I scored for $50 in that flea market (YES!) was working but one of the four original Beyer mic input trannies suddenly went open-circuit, necessitating replacement, and that occurred around 1990. I decided in favor of replacing them all with the Jensen 115 mic trannies, which were expensive then and still are, but well worth it! I also rebuilt the entire unit and replaced all of the electrolytics and coupling caps, and then removed all of the noisy pots and replaced them with ALPS units. The master volume dual pot was also removed and replaced with an ALPS Black Beauty and the tracking was much better afterward.

How did it sound? MAGNIFICENT, of course. Why do you see these things going for more than $1K in average condition these days on eBay? They are worth it!

It is no surprise to me that the MX-10 and its twin, MX-35 (different knobs and sharp edged faceplate) along with the Altec tube mixers are so revered and favored in a lot of today's studios!

The only drawback on the MX-10 is the way they assigned mic inputs by way of a horizontal switch, to L, C, R, rather than develop what we call a "pan" pot, so there is no "inbetween position". The Beyer trannies which are not that great to begin with, are probably responsible for some amount of distortion, often nice sounding, but not what I personally wanted, and then there is the obvious lack of phantom power, not to mention that all of the XLRs are not properly configured for current standards, which designate Pin 2 as "hot".

Correct those things and you will have a great unit to record through!

Good luck with yours!

And...I hope you get another copy of the Lp you mentioned!
