Nakamichi Reference Recording Series Pre-Recorded Cassettes

Hi Forum Members:
Today I came across a reading describing an interview by David Tarumoto of High Performance Review on Doug Sax ( founder of Sheffield Lab and Mastering Lab ) in 1984. Below is the section that mentions about Nakamichi. As most of you know that in 1984 Nakamichi has released a series of pre-recorded cassettes using modified Nakamichi ZX-9 in realtime ( 1:1 ) with TDK MA Type-IV tapes in both Dolby B and C NR. 6 different companies' master tapes are being used and the only analog master tapes used is from Sheffield Lab.

Question: You appear to be positive about the cassettes. Why's that?

Answer: The question is how good can a cassette be? With no holds barred. That's going to be answered by our cassettes that are going to be made by Nakamichi from 1/2-inch 30ips tapes that we have specially prepared. Already with three different listening panels, our cassettes have been demonstrated side-by-side, at matched levels, with our compact discs. All felt that the cassettes are sonically superior to our compact discs. That's something that hasn't existed before. I feel taht this is where the market is really going. When these [special] cassettes are played on a Nakamichi player, it is truly a high-end product. Not just merely good for a cassette.

Enjoy,
Mike
