RE: Where there any advantages over CD - other than size? nt

Hi, Bhasi:

The only possible "advantages" which DAT might have over a CDR might be the ability to record at 48 kHz, rather than the standard 44.1 kHz, and the other GREAT advantage of continuously recording up to 2 hours on standard length DAT media. With a pro model CD recorder, (HHB machines in particular) you can totally avoid copy protection or if you so desire, "flag" a disc so it may not be reproduced on common machines after the fact.

When CD recorders became available and somewhat affordable as an alternative to recording onto a DAT in the sense of live recording, they offered far cheaper and more readily available blank media, for one thing, but were limited to 80 minutes per disc. Not only did you have the option of instant access to a selection, but it was then possible to upload an entire recording to an editing platform of some sort. With DAT, you had to operate such functions in REAL-TIME.

I normally recorded both to CDR and to DAT before I acquired my Alesis Masterlink ML-9600 some years ago. The Masterlink was at that time a woderful alternative, for it included in one box, the possibility of recording at higher resolution, editing and uploading from CDR media to its internal hard drive for all sorts of possibilities.

That was one reason why it was termed the "DAT killer". And it was!

Here is another thing to ponder, if you wish to do so:

Why was it never thought of to make available TWO-SIDED blank CDR media?

I mean, once the disk is in a player, you do not need to read the titles, right? A simple label in the center would have sufficed to identify the disc and on some systems, you could input titling information.

Just my .02 on that matter!
