Hi, Bhasi:
Be very careful when handling any old DAT tapes.
Try to fast forward and then rewind them before you play them on any machine. This packs the tape and gives them proper tensioning.
Try also not to drop them onto any hard surface. I have heard from other engineers that this may partially erase them.
And lastly, treat your playback gear gently. Those mechanisms inside are like fine watch movements. And, they go out of alignment at a sneeze, which has been my own experience.
There are NO MORE replacement drive mechanisms being manufactured for most DAT machines, making repairs very costly.
Although I must have recorded over two hundred masters on DAT over the years and archive them, I hope to transfer them all gradually to other storage media.
Remember: there may not be any guarantees that commercial duplicated tapes of this sort will play back properly on a given machine. Unlike VHS machines, there is no external adjustment for the head drum, so if they are out-of-alignment with respect to YOUR machine, you need your machine serviced.
I once had a totally defective batch of DATs from TDK. They were garbage and I was forced to stop using them. Maxell tapes were okay, however. Do not purchase any DAT tapes made on ultra thin stock, either.
Big mistake, there too!
Good Luck!
