Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

its the design

For many years I owned the SM120, the next speaker up in that line. Its a 3 way system with 12" woofer.

I found the SM120's bass to be deficient in two aspects.

The SM120 had a pronounced midbass hump (around 80Hz), and then from about 150Hz up to the crossover point of 700Hz, the woofer's output was at least 6dB below the level of the midrange and tweeter. I think the efficiency of the woofer was nowhere near that of the midrange and tweeter. The midbass hump could give the impression of strong bass, but most of the upper bass and lower midrange was missing.

The second problem was that the woofer began to break up well before the crossover point was reached. The SM112 may be better in this regard. Modern speakers don't attempt to run a 12" woofer to 700Hz.

These problems are not easily fixed.
