Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Subwoofer set-up with a SET amp.

I am currently using an ACI Titan with a pair of Meadowlark Shearwaters--running the Shearwaters full range and using the Titan connected to the speaker outputs on my tube amp to fill in the bottom. I have been told that by hooking it up this way, the Titan would take on some of the character of the tube amp (AE Superamp). Is this actually the case or would there be no difference in the "character" of the Titan hooked up via line level?

My reason for asking is: I am considering using an 8 watt SET with the Shearwaters in conjunction with some ACI High Pass Filters. My other questions are:

1)I am guessing that the sensitivity of my Shearwaters will be, if not actually, then effectively, raised--Instead of their rated 89dB, would they be more comparable to a 92dB speaker? 95dB?

2) Which ACI filter should I get--85Hz or 65Hz? As I said earlier, I want the sound of my main amp to come through--so that would lead me to believe that a 65Hz filter would be better. However, 20 Hz difference doesn't seem like much. I guess I am trying to perform a balancing act between maintaining the character of my amp and main speakers while taking the some of the load off of them at the same time.

Thanks for all opinions/suggestions!
