thanks to all for comments, much appreciated.

I should perhaps have stated that I was actually listening with my own gear at the dealer's place, I lugged it all there after working hours and we sat there listening until after 10pm... I told you the dealer's a good guy! I can take the speakers home when I pay them but if it sounds catastrophic in my room I can hand them back.

anyway, I'll try to go to some other dealers and hear some other speakers today. I know one that does JM Reynaud and another that has Alon and Eggleston (probably too expensive but just to get an idea).

thanks again for the input, I'll keep you posted on what's happening!
