HELP! confused after audition.

I'm looking to replace my TDL RTL3's with something better as I feel they limit the sound of my system. I've now spent two evenings with my dealer (great guy!) auditioning Sonus Faber Grand Piano Home, Concerto Home and Spendor FL8. I prefer the Sonus Fabers over the Spendor (easily) and the Grand Piano over the Concerto (not so obvious). We spent a good few hours changing both speaker cables and interconnects and got the Grand Pianos to sound pretty good but I still feel there's something missing. I cannot say what it is but there was no "yeah" sensation with any of the speakers. Voices didn't sound really natural, there was never any doubt it was a recording if you know what I mean. The midrange felt a bit held back, like there was something in the way between the speaker and me. The sound never really let go of the speaker either.

I am a beginner in this game, am I expecting/demanding too much? Perhaps I'm putting too much faith into these new speakers and want them to sound marvellous with my other, relatively modest, components? Perhaps it is not at all the speakers that are the "bottleneck"?

Hmm, I'm all confused and don't know what to do. Hoping for some input from the expertise at the Asylum.

Cheers,
mikke
